Saint Mark Daily Advent Devotional – December 29, 2014
by Jim Harper
Scripture: John 2:1-11
This scripture tells the story of Jesus’ first miracle – turning water into wine at a wedding in Cana. It interests me for several reasons. First, Jesus is at the wedding because he, his mother and his disciples were invited. Cana is just a few miles from Nazareth, so this was his home turf. Second, his mother was more concerned about the lack of wine than he was. However, he exhibited compassion to her and his host by acting. Third, Jesus’ actions and words were very mundane; he did not draw attention to himself.
The lesson I take from this story is that there are opportunities presented to us every day calling for our action. If we can just be present and let God into our thoughts, we can have an impact on others by our Christ-like words and actions. Who knows? Our small addition may seem like a miracle to someone else.
Prayer: Lord, help me stay focused on the now and channel the Holy Spirit today. I pray to be a vessel for your goodness and not expect acknowledgement for my words and deeds. Let this become my SOP (standard operating procedure). Amen.
